Another hot and humid day in KL, and that can only mean one thing….what mall are we hitting today? Previously, when we were planning on going to the Mytown Mall (yesterday’s outing), we had seen that there were actually two other malls close by. I did stupidly suggest that we could maybe try and cover all three as I suspected that they might be quite small, quiet and/or old, so they wouldn’t take long for us to cover them. We obviously didn’t end up doing that because R, in his wisdom, had pointed out that we could do these on another occasion. So, dearest readers, that is what we did, and today we went off to explore the Aeon and Sunway Velocity Malls.

Aeon Mall

We took the MRT from Bukit Bintang to Maluri this time (the stop after Cochrane). The Aeon Mall can be accessed from the MRT station via an underpass, which was great. It’s a small shopping centre, but it does have a great grocery store (an Aeon grocery), a Aeon department store and lots of dining and food places. The downside to the mall is that it wasn’t very big, and once you have eaten and got your groceries, there is not much else to see or do. We planned on getting some items at the grocery, but were going to get them later once we were leaving, so that we didn’t need to cart them about with us whilst we were walking about the mall. We walked around the various floors and decided to use the food court to get our lunch in, but the place we wanted to use (a Chinese food seller) did not accept payment by card. We are also getting quite low on actual currency now, so we are trying to minimise our cash spend, so that we don’t need to get out more actual cash. So, as we had covered the mall quicker than we expected and we were now getting a little hungry, we decided to head over to the other mall (about a 10-minute walk away) instead and try to get some lunch there. We also didn’t bother with the groceries as it was still to early in our day to get these.

Sunway Velocity Mall

The first thing that struck me about the Sunway Velocity Mall was that it looked like an old 1980’s Scifi styled mall that was probably sensational in its heyday, but those times were long gone. I didn’t actually hold out much hope that we would be impressed with it, especially as our initial problem was trying to get into it. Yes, the problem of being on the other side of a very busy road from where you want to be was once again an issue. We noticed a couple of walkway bridges from buildings and thought that was our answer, and it was in a way, but not intuitively. The walkways were obviously later connections to an office and residential building on the opposite side of the street, and we had to find a route that we (as the general public) could use to access this walkway because it was access-controlled by the main entrances. Anyway, we eventually found a route that led us to the walkway, and finally, we entered the mall. Well, we were very pleasantly surprised by the mall, as it was great.

There were loads of shops to check out, plenty of places to eat at, including one of our favourite Chinese restaurants that is also at Lalaport mall. It wasn’t just the dome part of the building, which is what we thought was ‘the mall’, no, there were various other additional extension areas which led to other external shops and even to an MRT station (Cochrane). There was a ‘grow your own food’ farm area on the roof, and plenty of places for kids to play. It was amazing, and we were quite in awe of it all. Another thing we find quite exciting and intriguing is the fact that some of these malls are like giant mazes – even when you try to remember a route, you quickly become disoriented because of the layout and the floors, and the signage is not always great.

We did obviously find our way back out again after getting some lunch, buying some groceries and picking up a few small items. We made our way back home and went down the Jalan Alor food street, which was getting into full swing for the evening crowd. Home to a nice, relaxing shower and rest….
