TRAVELTHAILAND

Today's plan is to introduce A&A to the joy of travel by canal boat. This is one of the items that they have yet to tick off the ‘things to do list’ – yes, I had drafted a list of about 25 things that were suggestions for our guests to complete during their time in Bangkok. That said, S&R also managed to add some additional ones that I didn’t have on the list (an evening out to Khaoson Road!).

So off we all went to get the canal ferry from the Saphan Wittayu Pier at the end of Wireless Road, just down from the Central Embassy mall and the Nai Lert Park. As R has already alluded to, these are quite an experience as you need to hop on and off them very quickly and ensure you don’t end up in the canal. A boat was just in as we arrived, and thankfully, we all managed to get aboard safely and even found a seat. The fee for all of us was 100 baht (£2.37) for about a 25-minute ride to the Bangkapi Lifestyle Mall. Again, R & I had been to this mall twice before, so I won’t go into detail about the mall itself. The ride is, of course, half the fun! That said, we all sat at the back of the boat, and the vibrations and smoke from the diesel engine wasn’t that great an experience! It is quite fun when the boats speed up or when they pass a boat coming in the opposite direction, as the waves make the bounce both exciting and terrifying at the same time.

The mall was actually very busy, but we split into groups and explored the various floors. S came with us, and that meant R, and I trotted about after her as she went into various shops and bought various items (items that she is probably not going to have space in her bag for!). Then we met up with A&A for a later lunch, and then continued to cover a little more of the shops. I’m sure both A&A were demented with us as S was taking a lot longer than they needed to cover the various mall levels. However, we eventually all met up again and then headed over to the nearby Makro store to check it out. We also bought some items for dinner here before we headed back to the pier to get the ferry back home.
