Silom and the Dusit Central Park Mall

Despite my great intentions (similar to my intentions to exercise more and eat less!), I find that I fail miserably.  Rather than writing up our day in the evenings, which would be great, we are usually too exhausted by the time we get home after being out and about during the day.  We are weary from the heat and just want to chill and relax. Well, that is my excuse as to why I am sitting here now trying to write up events from several days ago – and hoping I’m not getting things too muddled up much - arghh! I must try and do better!

Before we start, and in case you are wondering, the mouth and sleep issues are much improved, so thankfully, all is good on both fronts.

Today’s outing is to the Silom area. This is an area that we have covered a little in the past, when we were here last year and staying in the Sathorn area. However, one of our main objectives is to visit the new Dusit Central Mall, which is located around here.

We start our trip by hopping onto the MRT from Sukhumvit and getting off at Silom. The new mall is right beside one of the exits at the MRT station, but we are not going there right away, so we head onwards down the Si Lom Road. We pass various shops, street sellers and a mall, but we are out to find some morning markets that we have heard about, which we did not see the last time we were here.

We have a little rest outside of the Silom Complex Mall – as we are not too tired, exhausted (or hungry) yet, we don’t quite need to get indoors to cool down, but it is just refreshing to take everything in that is going on around us. There is a fab little outdoor bar area here, which looks like it comes alive in the evening, as there is an area for musicians to play, and we have seen some similar type outdoor areas (also sponsored by the Thailand Singha beer/ale corporation) near the EM Sphere area. R takes a photo for a lovely Thai family, and it makes us smile just seeing this little family enjoying their day out together and grateful for his offer.

Sala Daeng Market (Green Umbrella)

We walk along Convent Road (named because there is a convent located there), where there are several food street vendors, and before we know it, we arrive at the Sala Daeng Market. As usual, all my senses go into overdrive with the sounds, sights and colours around me. When we came to Thailand last year for the first time, these markets were a little intimidating to us, and they sort of scared us because we didn’t know much about the Thai foods or even how to order something, especially if there was no description in English, but now we are a little more capable and adventurous, so we embrace these markets now.

We decided to get our lunch here before the lunch crowds descend. We have learnt that it is usually the case and a wise move to get in before the crowds arrive, or to wait until after the crowds have left before we eat. I opt for a shrimp pad thai, and R goes for a pork and wanton soup dish. They were both really good and cost just over £3 in total. We also picked up a few items at the market, including a sticky rice that had been baked in bamboo and some fried bananas (again – going back to my plan to ‘try’ various new dishes).

Some photos from our time at the market and a few YouTube links to some YouTubers that we follow who have covered the Sala Daeng Market area.

The Commons

After lunch, we continued on, starting to make our way towards the Dusit Central Mall, and we came across The Commons on Sala Daeng Road. We didn’t realise that there was more than one ‘Commons’ in Bangkok. Last year, we visited the Thonglor Commons when we were staying in the Thonglor area. The idea behind these ‘centres’ is to establish a cool, relaxing community vibe, which also has a bit of a work and retail space. It has a sort of hip vibe, and if it’s anything like the other one, then these are really busy and alive in the evening when the ‘young crowd’ go out to relax and they have live music and bands playing. During the day, they are generally a lot quieter with ‘digital nomad type’ people sitting on their laptops with a coffee, doing some work.

They had an interesting experience, which I thought might be fun, called “Oh La Lab” which is a craft fragrance studio offering immersive perfume-making workshops where you can design and create your own custom scents with expert guidance. It's a hands-on experience to explore fragrance notes, learn about perfumery, and bottle your unique Eau de Parfum to take home.

We think the girls might like The Commons, so we make a note to tell them about it (though I think they have already got their schedule fully packed from their own TikTok/Instagram research.

We came to yet another outdoor ‘market’ shortly after we left The Commons, but this one had even fewer fans in it, and R was starting to feel the heat, so he waited outside whilst I had a little wander inside. Many of the stalls were similar, and as we had just eaten, we weren’t hungry at all, so it was more just to file away another possible future visit (though at the rate we are going, we will never get the key areas we want to cover done!).

Central Dusit Mall

Finally, after skirting around the edge area of Lumphini Park, we arrive back at the Central Dusit Mall.

Dusit Central Park is a mixed-use skyscraper development in the Bang Rak district. It occupies a 9.1-acre site on the corner of the Sala Daeng Intersection at the beginning of Si Lom Road in the financial district of Bangkok. It has replaced the old Dusit Thani Hotel, which was located here from 1970 to 2019. The location overlooks the vast expanse of Lumphini Park, making it a prime real estate property. The complex comprises three skyscrapers: a new hotel, a residential tower and an office tower, connected by an eight-storey retail podium featuring a rooftop park.

The mall opened in September 2025, so as you can expect for a brand new mall, it is pristine and has a lot of visitors flocking to it.

Aside from the retail shops, there are around 19 Michelin-rated food sellers in the food court area, so one is spoilt for choice in that respect. We enjoyed walking around the mall, and aside from the food court, which we did not try out on this occasion (but I’m sure we will in the future!), we absolutely loved the rooftop views and walkways. We were there during the day, but we need to come back here in the evening, when I can imagine that the place will look spectacular with the views and the lights.

After we toured the mall, we made our way home via the MRT, picking up some dinner items from TOPS grocery for our evening meal.
