The Stunning Petronas Towers

Today is our first proper full day of starting to explore Kuala Lumpur, as yesterday we didn’t do much because we needed a bit of a rest and some time to catch up on other bits and pieces.

We have a fantastic view of the Petronas Towers from our balcony, and especially at night when they are illuminated (along with the KL Tower) against the dark sky and the city skyscape. The stainless steel and glass twin spires are iconic and what most people associate with Kuala Lumpur. I’ve always had a fascination for architecture, and this building had been on my ‘must-see list’ for some time.

To get there, we head toward the Pavilion shopping mall, where a connection walkway leads to the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC). This drops you out at the KLCC park, which is right beside the Petronas Towers. There is also a large shopping mall called Suria KLCC within the base of the towers, and that is also what we have in mind today. Remember, the weather is far, far too hot and humid for us Scots to endure for too long.

Of course, as soon as we find the Pavilion Mall, we pop inside, and it looks huge. Although we want to have a look around, I need to keep his nibs on track, or we will not make it to our intended destination. We follow the signs for ‘The Connection’, which is the path that leads to the KLCC. Although there are areas that divert off to other places, we generally follow the pedestrians who are going in the same direction as us. The walkway actually reminded me a little of Toronto’s ‘PATH’ walkway system, which cuts across the city, albeit the PATH is underground, and this is mainly above ground.

KLCC Park

We arrive at the KLCC Park, and as I’ve seen some images of this, we take a walk around it. The park spans 17 acres, with jogging and walking paths. It is a lovely place to explore, offering some great views as well. I also loved the fact that there is a playground and a water area for children to play and cool down in within the park. The fountains have symphony light shows every evening, so we will need to try and catch one of these during our time in KL.

Petronas Towers

The Petronas Towers are, of course, the main highlight of the area. Also known as the Petronas Twin Towers and colloquially as the KLCC Twin Towers, they are an interlinked pair of 88-story supertall skyscrapers in Kuala Lumpur, standing at around 452m. From 1996 to 2004, they were the tallest buildings in the world until they were surpassed by the Taipei 101 building. They remain the tallest twin skyscrapers in the world and were the tallest building in Malaysia until 2021, when they were surpassed by the Merdeka 118 (more on this in the next blog) building.

The architecture of the building is based on a tube-structure design, and the 88 floors are constructed largely of reinforced concrete, with a steel and glass façade, which is designed to resemble motifs found in Islamic art. The building took seven years to complete and was finished in August 1999.

Whilst we love looking at the building, we are not interested in paying the £23-43 ticket price (each) to enter and access the observation areas of the towers.

Suria KLCC

After admiring the towers for a bit, we head into the mall. Suria KLCC is a 140,000 m2 upscale retail centre at the foot of the Petronas Towers. It features mostly foreign luxury goods and high-street labels. Its attractions include an art gallery, an underwater aquarium and a Science centre. Boasting approximately 300 stores, Suria KLCC is touted as one of the largest shopping malls in Malaysia. During holidays or celebration days, Suria KLCC is the top spot to see the decorations, especially at the main entrances and in Centre Court. It also promotes the uniqueness and beauty of Malaysia's cultural diversity towards the visitors.

As normal (or us), we spent a good few hours wandering about this mall, and when we got a bit hungry and needed a rest, we opted for a McDonald’s meal! Yeah, I know, I know, but sometimes you just crave a burger and some fries! We did some more wandering and made sure to pick up some food for our dinner in the evening, and then, as we were starting to flag with the heat, we decided to call it a day and hailed a Grab taxi to take us back to the apartment.
