Bangkok, Day 12

So what sparked this uncharacteristic outburst from my beloved R, you may ask? Well, after another few busy days, we decided that we would have another 'rest day' today. I had some blog catching up to do because I know if I leave it too long, then I'll never be able to keep up (or remember where we went and what we did, etc.). As I said previously, this blog is partly for us to remember this trip, as there's just so much to see and do that I'm sure it's all going to go by in a whizz.

1st Dec 2024

Now I wasn't lying when I said this, BUT we also needed to go out and get some shopping as we were out of bananas, down to 2 yoghurts, and we had nothing in for lunch or dinner. So I suggested that we head to the Big C supermarket as we'd been there a few days ago and it wasn't that far from us. No,w R didn't disagree with this in the slightest (he likes his food too!).

However, we left the apartment a little later than normal - around 10am and as soon as we got out, the intense heat could be felt. Now there is also a reason why R doesn't normally wear light grey t-shirts and of course today would be the day that he forgot to put on any deodorant after his shower, so he was a bit annoyed with himself for that too (sounds like an R problem if you ask me!).

Anyway, we set off and we were passing the Donki mall when he suggested we could pop in there for some brunch/lunch. So we did that, and this time we knew exactly where we were going and how to order what we wanted, so that was great. We had a couple of very nice chicken and rice dishes each.

After lunch, we headed off to the Big C, where we wandered around in the lovely air-conditioned shop and obtained our various groceries. Something that we find really, really weird is that there is a meat section where all the fish, seafood and meats like chicken, mince etc., are just sitting out and the customers help themselves and bag what they want. It seems a little unhygienic to us (and I dread to think what some folks would be like back home), but we have seen this a lot in the big supermarket areas and everyone seems to abide by 'the rules'.

Another thing that we find astounding is the price difference for groceries. It is so, so much cheaper than we pay back in the UK. That said, I think some of the imported foods are quite expensive, and I don't think I shall be having any wine during this trip as it's much, much more expensive here (though it's too hot for wine also, so that's a blessing, I guess!). As an example, A & S would be in their element to find noodle packs at 10 baht (£0.23), Heinz sauce refills of 250mls at 25 baht (£0.57) and a pack of Mentos sweets at 10 baht (£0.23). Why are we paying so much for these same items in the UK??

After, getting our groceries which included some cooked breaded fish, rice and little sausages (all ready cooked and just needing reheating), as well as some fruit and treats, we made our way back to the apartment. I did have a little late afternoon nap as I'd been up from 7am (R was up about 9am) and we chilled for the rest of the day. Enjoying our dinner and a tasty treat for afters.

Thus, when R more than exceeded his daily step target, he accused me of being "a lying cow" and that we were having a rest day. Now to plan what I can hit him with for tomorrow....mhhhhawwwawwwaaahhhhh (that's my evil laugh by the way!).
